Manala Afterwork Jazz is a weekly jazz club in the center of Helsinki. Finland's top musicians perform at the club in a cozy and atmospheric environment. The event is free of charge, so we recommend using the money saved from the admission tickets on the restaurant's legendary pizzas and refreshments!

The late 1950’s and early 1960’s was a golden period in Duke Ellington’s prolific career. Both Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, his creative partner, were composing and arranging at the very top of their game. The Duke Ellington Orchestra of this period was also one of the best that the maestro ever had, with talented newcomers and experienced veterans joining forces to create a tight, swinging ensemble with exciting soloistic fireworks.

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s seasonal performances of Ellington & Strayhorn’s Nutcracker Suite have quickly become a popular holiday tradition for the members of the orchestra and audience alike, and now UMO continues their exploration of this golden period of The Duke Ellington Orchestra by performing the pendant to the Nutcracker Suite, the equally wonderful but lesser known Peer Gynt Suite, originally composed by Edvard Grieg. This suite was recorded and released in 1960, on the same album as the Nutcracker Suite.

The other multi-movement work to be performed is Such Sweet Thunder, made up of original compositions by Ellington and Strayhorn based on and inspired by literature and characters created by William Shakespeare. This music was recorded and released in 1957 and is considered one of the highlights of Ellington and Strayhorn’s collaborative work as composers.

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s artistic director and chief conductor Ed Partyka conducts the concert.

Helmi Antila (born 2000) is a violinist, pianist and singer-songwriter from Helsinki, Finland. Her brand new group will perform jazz, pop, and soul influenced compositions, written by Helmi. The musicians are known from bands such as Peela, H ney B. & T-Bones and Saimaa. On their debut concert, you will hear songs that cover familiar themes such as nature, love, relationships and youth.

Jazz Jkl Collective and trumpeter Mikko Gunu Karjalainen perform a tribute to trumpeter Roy Hargrove. There will be pulsating and timelessly swinging jazz, when the Turku Jazz Festival's Artist of the Year interprets the music of a modern jazz legend who passed away at only 49 years old.

Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet's third album Landmarks was released November 4, 2022 on the German Ozella Music label. On their third album, the quintet combines even more boldly the rhythmic language of modern jazz, the sounds of Nordic jazz and the tones of improvised music into a fresh sound world, where Martti Vesala's strong compositions act as landmarks.

The album's music was born at a turning point in life, where letting go of the old familiar and gathering the courage to face the new were key experiences inspiring the composition. The album is about searching and the power of change.
