Broken Shadows brings together four luminaries of the American jazz scene: Tim Berne, Chris Speed, Reid Anderson and Dave King. Saxophonists Tim Berne and Chris Speed have been playing together since 1992; Bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King – two thirds of the legendary band The Bad Plus – have been playing together for over 35 years. Named after an Ornette Coleman composition, this all-star project honors the legacy of the music of their idols and mentors Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Julius Hemphill.

These iconic figures created an ever-resonant avant-garde out of the folk-art influences of their early surroundings, a canon that comprises the hard blues and deep lament, keening celebration and hollering protest. Wound through the DNA of such avant-jazz classics as “Dogon A.D.,” “Lonely Woman,” “Civilization Day,” “Walls- Bridges” and “Song for Ché” are the age-old sounds of back-alley bars and carnival midways, funeral processions and holiday parades, the rave-ups of Saturday night shading into the hymns of Sunday morning.

Maan Tila is a quintet from Helsinki.

The band, led by vibraphonist / composer Mikko Antila, consists of a warm combination of trumpet and tenor saxophone combined with a light, piano-free rhythm section. The timbre of the quintet is rich, bright and vibrant.

“I try to compose every day,” Antila says. “Or I usually compose anyway, whether I like it or not. I work off the emotions I experience every day into music. I feel that in this way I can turn negative feelings in particular into positive ones by first pouring them into melodies and melodies again to be interpreted by musicians and heard by listeners. Each composition has its own beautiful moment where it is created. I always try to tell it to the members of the band, and the interpretation of the quintet is based on it.”

The concert is supported by City of Helsinki, Svenska Kulturfonden and The Finnish Music Foundation.
