Verneri Pohjola plays Pekka Pohjola (FIN)
As superb a bassist as the late Pekka Pohjola was, in Frank Zappa’s and Mike Oldfield’s opinion, for instance, his greatest legacy is his compositions, whose Finnishness in prog and fusion compare with that of Sibelius in classical music. In his final years Pohjola did a half acoustic tour, where Verneri played his dad’s music first time in public. The arrangements were Pekka’s, of course. Only now enough time has passed that Verneri feels he can tackle his father’s music totally from his own viewpoint. The pieces he has picked are the ones he feels closest to. We can hardly wait!
Tenor Battle (NOR)
This one you haven’t heard. At least not done this touchingly and as holistically. Combining jazz and opera is a rare and tricky business. The Norwegian tenorist succeeds so awesomely, because, unlike the others who have tried it, the unlikely synthesis happens literally in him. Having shaped the frontline of Norwegian jazz with Wibutee, Bugge Wesseltoft’s New Conception of Jazzand his own Kornstadt Trio, he didn’t guess the consequences, when he saw Cavalleriana Rusticana in New York’s Metropolitan in 2009. Soon he was taking opera singing lessons and then he made the astonishing Tenor Battle album (Jazzland Recordings, 2015).

In the summer of 1968 Miles Davis heard Dave Hollandat Ronnie Scott’s in London and asked him to join his band. Soon the 32-year-old bassist, inspired by CharlesMingus, Scott LaFaro and Jimmy Garrison, was in New York shaping the jazz to come with Miles, who was electrifying his music then. Using both the double and electric bass, Holland has since played pretty much all styles of jazz on his extensive career and dappled in rock, too, with Bonnie Raitt. Deep jazz is dearest to him and that’s what he investigates with his small groups. The boss of his own Dare2 label and a music teacher, Holland likes to cite his friend Sam Rivers: Don’t leave anything out – play all of it! Now guitarist Lionel Loueke brings Africa to the table.

Botanists know it: hybrids have power. It’s true in music, too. The Danish Kalaha played one totally improvised gig at the STRØM-festival in 2013, and the players as well as the audience knew right away that here was a band with awesome potential. The energetic, colourful and surprising sound stands out in any company and you can dance to it or dig it cerebrally. Drummer, samplerist EmilDe Waal, the afrobeat, ska and surf loving guitarist Niclas Knudsen (John Tchikai, Dave Liebman, Tom Jones, Ibrahim Electric) and the producer-DJ’s Rumpistol and Spejderrobot, who use all manner of electronic devices, mix a strangely invigorating soup of their myriad influences.
