For more than a decade, Verneri Pohjola has been one of the most original Finnish modern jazz artists. The trumpeter's album Bullhorn, which was released in the spring to rave reviews, has established his position as a powerful and visionary jazz artist.

The reshaped quartet includes some of the most acclaimed names in the Finnish jazz field: pianist Aki Rissanen, bassist Antti Lötjönen and drummer Teppo Mäkynen.

At the Sello Hall concert, the jazz ensemble will be reinforced by a string quartet: Eriikka Maalismaa (violin), Kati Kuusava (violin), Olga Reskalenko (viola), Markus Hohti (cello)

Women’s choir KYN performs Teosto-winning Mikko Hassinen’s compositions on 30 October at Koko Jazz Club. In concert KYN Goes Hassinen the choir will be joined by the top artists Manuel Dunkel (saxhophone), Ville Herrala (double bass) and Hassinen himself on the drums. The night will be kicked off with a discussion where Kaija Viitasalo, the conductor for KYN, and maestro Hassinen shed light on the background of the project.

If the concept is unusual on paper, what makes it even more unusual is the fact that the jazz band is not to accompany the choir but to form an organic and democratic union with the choir: indeed, the foundation of Hassinen’s compositions is dialogue between the band and the choir. The programme consists of the tree-part piece Jos mina puhuisin sinulle, based on poems of Virpi Stenlund, and five beloved Finnish folk and schlager songs, newly arranged by Mikko Hassinen.

KYN is an ambitious women’s choir, driven by an impulse to reform the traditional ideas of choral music. One of the best Finnish women’s choirs, KYN tests genre boundaries by including jazz and popular music into their repertoire. This marching to the beat of their own drum has made KYN stand out from other choirs. One of their latest innovations has been “ethnic jazz”, a new genre that they have developed through a number of commissioned works.

Pianist Karri Luhtala met Swedish saxophonist Magnus Dölerud at a jam session in New York last winter. The Finn and Swede decided to collaborate and bring in an Italian rhythm section with Valerio Vantaggio and Jacopo Ferrazza. Welcome to Metro to enjoy the music of a unique combo of three nationalities .
The concert is part of Il Mondo Di Karri series of jazz concerts.

The 34th annual Tampere Jazz Happening will take place from the 29th of October to the 1st of November, 2015, when the stages of Pakkahuone, Klubi, and Telakka will be filled to the brim with music from some of today's most captivating modern jazz musicians. The festival will feature altogether 26 ensembles, 18 of which are international.

Olavi Salonen Jazz Quintet play rarely heard free jazz tunes by Norman Howard, Charles Tyler, Ronnie Boykins and Frank Wright.
