Jazz Finland Live

Frank Carlberg is a Finnish pianist and composer who has lived in the United States for the last 30 years. Carlberg writes music based on poems and other texts, in styles ranging from modern jazz to bebop and swing. He has written music based on texts by American poet Robert Creeley, and given musical form to the writing of Finnish poets like Kai Nieminen and Anselm Hollo.

Carlberg’s own projects carry his name and include Tivoli-trio, big band and quintet, with five albums under its belt. He has collaborated with e.g. Kenny Wheeler and Bob Brookmeyer.

The concert is a part of the UMO’s 40th anniversary concert series and it showcases Carlberg’s own compositions for big band. In addition to older material, the evening will include a couple of premieres of new works. The pieces got their inspiration and themes from pianist Thelonious Monk’s work, the circus and the world of carnivals – and often from movies. Conductor: Vellu Halkosalmi.

Juhani Aaltonen is unarguably one of the cornerstones of Finnish jazz with his lush and soulful tenor sax sound. “Junnu” will reach the honourable age of 80 this year; however, his instrument sings more movingly than ever before. On the Finnish tour, Aaltonen will be leading his quartet, composed of his bandmates from over the years. Drummer Reiska Laine is Aaltonen’s enduring partner in music and another grand old man of Finnish jazz. The bass is in the able hands of Ulf Krokfors, who is as much at home performing solo as with a big band, while Iro Haarla, who has earned her spurs in, for example, Edward Vesala’s Sound & Fury, occupies the pianist’s seat. The couple Krokfors/Haarla are also known for their excellent compositions.

Juhani Aaltonen Quartet has released one album, “Conclusions”, in 2010 on the label TUM Records. The title, indeed, is reflective of the maestro’s long career. However, room is left for the present too, represented by free improvisation, which the group embraces both live and on the recording. By the means of improvisation, meditation upon past is rendered relevant in the now.

A trio without any harmony instrument allows freedom of musical expression but also requires musical responsibility. TM3 is a trio which collaborates and elaborates these two elements. Their music is allowed to find new directions and is always given freedom to breathe. Their repertuaire consists of Mäkynen´s original compositions and some less familiar jazz standards.

"I love the improvisation part. I'm really happy to have the luxury to express myself through jazz because it can go anywhere," she says. "I love the interaction between the musicians on stage. I'm not the kind of musician who only wants to play a solo, show what I can do and be on my little island on stage. I like to have collective improvisation with all the musicians around me—having a dialogue. I think that's really magic. It's so diverse, it can go everywhere." She avows, "Art is very important to keep people inspired, critical and in touch with spiritual and social parts of life. Jazz can make people grow and develop creative thinking; it touches all those aspects. Jazz is life."
