Jazz Finland Live

In Koko Jazz Club's night of two trios we will be in for Jussi Fredriksson Trio and plunge into Jazz & Dance with another trio, led by Timo Kämäräinen.

The core theme of Jussi Fredriksson Trio's new album is the uncertainty of things -- that of life, artistic creation -- but rather than wallowing in anxiety they look on the bright side of uncertainty, inspired by Tove Jansson's book Taikatalvi.

The other trio to perform tonight is an encounter of friends. Guitarist Timo Kämäräinen and bassist Timo Hirvonen have made music together for almost 20 years now. They will be joined by drummer Jaska Lukkarinen on an improvised set with a group of top dancers.

Chile-born Antonio Flinta has been based in Italy since 1993 and, indeed, his quartet is a very stylish example of a group that draws from the strong tradition of Italian jazz. This quartet bases their explorations of the possibilities and boundaries, textures and different shades of jazz on original compositions and intensive communication.

The lauded trumpeter Verneri Pohjola -- know from various top-notch groups -- performs material from his new, acclaimed album Bullhorn. The moods of Pohjola's compositions range from lyrical to vigoursly energetic, brought to life in all their nuances by his able crew.

The opening concert of the 2015 Tampere Jazz Happening features the freshest Nordic jazz talent. The 16th annual Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase presents five of the most interesting new ensembles from the north – each one from a different Nordic country. The concert is produced in collaboration with the Finnish Jazz Federation.

The calming music of the Bremer/McCoy duo sounds simply elegant, incorporating pure sounds and mesmerizing compositions. These two Danish musicians create an intimate connection to their listeners with their irresistible and crisp jazz-folk style.

Pianist Joel Lyssarides and bassist Josef Karnebäck of Lyssarides/Karnebäck Duo won the prestigious Swedish Jan Wallander Prize for two consecutive years, in 2014 and 2015. In the hands of these two extremely versatile musicians, jazz bends from beautiful and intensive ballads to energetic moves. The duo's music sounds enjoyably effortless at all times.

The winner of the Finnish Young Nordic Jazz Comets competition, Katu Kaiku consists of three young musicians who masterfully weave colourful musical tales. The style of this ensemble playfully and evocatively mixes influences from bebop, free jazz, and pop, inviting listeners to discover new musical horizons.

Two Beat Dogs performs multifaceted jazz that is chock full of surprises. The quartet's collective compositions take influence from hip hop, folk, and experimental music, while leaving room for free improvisation, as well. The music of these young virtuosos bursts with enthusiasm and energy.

Mette Henriette is a Norwegian saxophonist and composer who, despite her young age, has lead multiple orchestras and performed all around the world. She will bring powerful compositions from her latest album – which will be released this fall – to perform in Tampere with her expressive trio.
