Jazz Finland Live

Peela consists of some of the finest upcoming jazz musicians in Helsinki, centering around the compositions of guitarist Johannes Granroth.

They draw influences from jazz, funk rock and neo soul to a blend where improvisation, powerful melodies, lush harmony and groovy rhythms play a central role. Their music is mostly instrumental, though at times enhanced by Maja Mannila’s virtuosic singing.

The band was founded in 2016 and along with actively gigging for nearly four years, Peela has released their debut album Layers in 2018, as well as their second album/ep Stepping Stones in 2020. They have managed to catch the attention of acclaimed musicians such as pianist Iiro Rantala, giving them a push in the right direction.

Jazz Finland is a national service organisation dedicated to the promotion of jazz music and jazz culture in Finland. Through its 10 annual, nationwide tours, Jazz Finland supports its mission to enable flourishing live jazz culture everywhere in the country. Guitar virtuoso Teemu Viinikainen is a master of strong and soulful playing. The concert, that is being held in kulttuuritalo Villa Rana, consists of both music and premier of document movie, which presents the story of Viinikainen's handcrafted guitar. 

Teemu Viinikainen's great expertise has been noted all around the world and he has been said to be the continuum of great modern jazz guitarists like Pat Metheny, Wayne Krantz and John Scofield. Viinikainen's virtuosic playing is known for its strong presence and sensibility and he is able to turn his deep knowledge of traditional jazz into a non-stopping well of inspiration.

The tenth anniversary year of Porvoo Jazz Festival will start with an international breeze, when Olli Soikkeli Quartet performs at the first club of the spring. Olli Soikkeli (b. 1991) has become one of the most respected gypsy jazz guitarists in the world, despite his young age. In Porvoo he will perform together with Grammy-winning pianist Marian Petrescu, bassist Joonas Tuuri and drummer Aleksi Heinola.
