Nicholas Payton has regrettably had to cancel his European tour and his subsequent performance at Savoy JAZZFest due to a travel problem. Instead of Payton’s trio, Norwegian trumpet player Nils-Petter Molvær’s Stitches line-up will take the stage Saturday 5 March.
The versatile trumpet player and composer Nils-Petter Molvær has become known in the fields of pop, rock and funk, and especially as a master of electroacoustic jazz. At Savoy JAZZFest, he will perform with his line-up created for the album Stitches, which includes Molvær, drummer Erland Dahlen, bassist Jo Berger Myhre and guitarist Johan Lindstrøm. Stitches was recorded during the corona lockdown, and in its music, Molvær’s touching trumpetism encounters dynamic electronic soundscapes.
The evening’s other act is Vijay Iyer, arguably one of the most significant jazz pianists of the moment, performing at Savoy JAZZFest material from his latest album UnEasy. Drummer Tyshawn Sorey and bassist Linda May Han Oh play alongside Iyer on both the album and the stage of the Savoy Theater.
