Jazz Finland Live

The solist of the night is the fabulous singer Nina Lindroos. She is an experienced performer and entertainer. Nina has given multible concerts in Finland and also abroad for ex. in Hamburg and in Dresden. Her strong areas are blues and jazz, but she has been quite successful even as a well known pop singer. On stage Lindroos is joined by Pekka Mesimäki (p) and llkka Hanski (b).

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, vocalist Mirja Mäkelä and Anna-Maria Helsing, who debuts as conductor of the orchestra, interpret Outi Tarkiainen’s compositions from the albums Unpainted Portraits and Into the Woodland Silence. The compositions combine the archaic of the North, the unpredictability of contemporary music, and the poetry that bring the listeners into the intimate atmosphere. The unique concert moves freely within the fields of jazz and contemporary music, framed by the strong solo performances of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s musicians.

The concert has been produced with exceptional methods in exceptional times in spring 2021: each section of the big band has recorded their own scores one at a time – according to the gathering restrictions of max 6 people – and the recording has been compiled and mixed afterwards. This is why the illustration is also exceptional: instead of a concert video, we will see some beautiful nature landscapes. Outi Tarkiainen herself hosts the concert.

Conductor Anna-Maria Helsing (b. 1971) has conducted almost all of the major Nordic orchestras and she has also made an outstanding career in the international orchestra field. She has worked e.g. as the artistic director of Oulu Philharmonic and is appointed as a Principal Guest Conductor of BBC Concert Orchestra in London. www.annamariahelsing.com

Mirja Mäkelä (b. 1968) has long been at the forefront of Finnish jazz singers. She has created her own style as a jazz singer and composer. Mäkelä has led her own bands for over 20 years, sung as the soloist with several jazz musicians and jazz bands, and released three solo albums. www.mirjamakela.com

Outi Tarkiainen (b. 1985) is one of the most interesting composers of her generation. Tarkiainen has composed orchestral, vocal, chamber and solo music, works for orchestras and soloists, and music for jazz orchestras. Jazz singer Elena Mîndru will bring her band on a Jazz-Finland-supported tour in November. The tour, which will take place in different cities in Finland as well as in Tallinn, includes a total of seven concerts.

Jazz singer and composer Elena Mîndru will celebrate her new album Hope in November with a seven-concert Jazz Finland co-production tour. The stage is shared with wonderful soloists of Elena Mîndru's well-known ensemble, which includes top Finnish jazz musicians: pianist-composer Tuomas J. Turunen, bassist Oskari Siirtola from Sointi Jazz Orchestra and drummer Anssi Tirkkonen from Game Music Collective.

Festival Friday's programme will begin with the Yrjö Award ceremony, which is the most prestigious prize given to jazz musicians in Finland by the Jazz Finland organisation. Following the award ceremony, the evening's audience will be treated to a performance by the winner of the award. From then on, the event will continue with Finnish ensembles: first, a performance by Linda Fredriksson, which celebrates and marks the release of their latest album, Juniper; then, a concert by Pepe Willberg & Jukka Eskola Statement, which focuses on the compositions of Otto Donner (1939–2013). The final performer of the evening will be Egyptian-Belgian singer Natacha Atlas.

The event will be opened by saxophonist and flutist Jorma Tapio together with his trio, Kaski. Tapio performs at the Tampere Jazz Happening with his own ensemble now for the seventh time, the first occasion being in the very first Jazz Happening in 1982. The second performer of the evening is Tomi Nikku 5tet, whose first album Light & Shade was released in September. At midnight, the stage will be filled by Dub Vallila's eight musicians.
