The “Saarnaaja” piece that will be premiered at the concert is a new unit composed by Rasmus Soini for Juhani Aaltonen and Sointi Jazz Orchestra, in honour of the 80-year-old Aaltonen and his soulful style. In fact, the name “Preacher” refers to the fact that Aaltonen’s style has been compared to the speech of preachers. In the piece, young musicians meet an experienced improviser, and the timbres of the big orchestra encounter a strong soloist interpretation.

After the intermission, Sointi Jazz Orchestra will perform its usual songs with Juhani Aaltonen, and compositions arranged for the joint concert.

Juhani “Junnu” Aaltonen (born 1935) is one of the most significant tenor saxophone players and flautists in the Finnish jazz scene. Diversity has always been the backbone of Aaltonen’s musical history and expression, which, combined with a powerful, appealing drive, and an intense style of playing, has enthralled listeners year after year.

Sointi Jazz Orchestra combines classical music influences with jazz and is a band established by professional musicians in the autumn of 2013. The sound of the band consists of a wide range of instruments. The band’s musical starting point is to attempt to renew the big band culture and to make it more diverse and lively by taking an acoustic approach. The attributes of the arrangements include “fresh” and “surprising”, which, in unison with dazzling improvisations, result in an interesting performance. The film-esque music of the band combines the ingredients of classical music with a rhythmic groove, where the unambiguous sense of the genre is blurred. As the stylistics boundaries are missing, only the feeling and freely flowing music are left.
