Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn wrote The Far East Suite together. It was recorded in December 1966. The nine-part series was inspired by Ellington’s orchestra’s extensive tours throughout the Far and Middle East, with its atmospheres reflecting the experiences the musicians had in the exotic countries they visited. Ellington and Strayhorn stick to basic big band instrumentation, but by their subtle use of Asian themes and motifs, they are able to create a wholly original, beautiful and succinct eastern palette of colors to add to their Afro-American expression. The Far East Suite is considered one of the most inspired of the pieces born as a result of the Ellington-Strayhorn partnership.

As a part of the night’s concert, UMO also interprets pieces by Finnish composers, such as Mikko Hassinen, Jarmo Savolainen and Kari Ikonen. The chosen compositions utilize eastern melodies and decorative arabesque gestures, creating an interesting counterpoint to Ellington’s and Strayhorn’s eastern sounds. Jouni Järvelä conducts the orchestra.
