Teemu Viinikainen, guitar
Ville Herrala, bass
Mika Kallio, drums
This trio, led by jazz guitarist Teemu Viinikainen, plays powerful jazz interpretations, where tonal beauty combines with burning emotions. The concert programme consists of Viinikainen’s latest compositions and borrowed pieces selected in accordance with the theme of the evening.
Mika Kallio’s extended drum kit produces a wide variety of different timbres. Together with Ville Herrala’s grounding double bass, they create a dynamic and rich beat. Viinikainen uses an old 1940s orchestra guitar, with which he conjures up both beautifully pure as well as piercingly coarse sounds.
The concert will be broadcast live at www.siba.fi/video

Birger's Ragtime Band

Birger’s Ragtime Band is a new traditional jazz constellation in Finland. The band was formed in spring 2011 by five very experienced jazz musicians. These musicians have played in different bands, in Finland and abroad since the early seventies. But their distinct love for the original New Orleans jazz tradition has finally brought these friends together, every member contributing with his skill and experience. The band members have played in all important jazz festivals where traditional jazz is presented in Finland and Sweden; Pori Jazz Festival, Baltic Jazz Festival and Kaamos Jazz Festival in Finland and Hällevik Traditional Jazz Festival and Askersund Jazz Festival in Sweden. The members have participated in numerous recordings.
The interest in traditional jazz music, played as concert music, gospel music and dance music has seen a renaissance. Nowadays young people who have been brought up with disco and techno music get very exited when listening and dancing to the acoustic rhythmic jazz music played by a live band. Birger’s Ragtime Band plays frequently in jazz clubs, restaurants, private parties and in company parties for customers.

Maratone Quintet's debut album Setting Out was released December 2008 by Free Agent Records. The group's second album Finding The Way will be released September 2012 by Prophone Records.
