The New Way – UMO & Jorma Kalevi Louhivuori,Vuotalo, helsinki26.9. At 19:00

keikka

Conductor: Kari Heinilä

Trumpet player Jorma Kalevi Louhivuori won the UMO Talent 2012 competition last autumn, and this concert will feature some of his compositions, arranged for large jazz orchestra. The programme also includes numbers by Kenny Wheeler and Miles Davis. J.K. Louhivuori’s expressive, soulful trumpet will naturally play the main role. Some of the arrangements were written specifically for this concert, two of them by Louhivuori himself. UMO will be conducted by Kari Heinilä.

Trumpet player Jorma Kalevi Louhivuori (b. 1984) is familiar to jazz enthusiasts as a member of the Sun Trio, Big Blue and the The Ricky Tick Big Band. A broad-minded and versatile musician, he was the band leader of The Northern Governors making its recording debut on the legendary Blue Note label last year and of the Liikkuvat Pilvet orchestra backing singer and songwriter Yona, who has also appeared with UMO. Louhivuori not only plays the trumpet but also composes, arranges, produces and sings. Despite his young age, he has already appeared with such jazz luminaries as Sean Jones, Bob Mintzer and Dave Liebman and has released five albums under the Italian-American CAM Jazz label.

Note! A pre-concert talk will be held in the café at the concert venue at 18.15.

Bass player Timo Hirvonen met drummer Rafael Barata at the Koko Jazz Club in summer 2012. Both found the experience to be so positive that Hirvonen decided to compose new music for an autumn 2013 concert series. The My Brazilian Heart ensemble came to include drummer Barata, saxophonist Joonatan Rautio and vibraphonist Severi Pyysalo, in addition to Hirvonen.
- As the name implies, the music is my ideas and feelings about the beat of Brazilian music and its attitude to life. I cannot – nor do I wish to – avoid being influenced by jazz. I strongly trust the intuition and aesthetics of the ensemble players in their interpretation of music that at times is very scarce on information. I believe that four views can be more than the sum of their parts, says Timo Hirvonen.

The concert is a joint production with Sibelius Academy and Koko Jazz Club.
