The twelfth DIG. Festival will fill up the Helsinki Music Centre between 28 and 30 October. The festival is organised by the Jazz Department of the University of the Arts Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy.

Jarmo Saari, winner of the Finland Prize, and his new super lineup will lead us all to the promised land of rhythm and frenzy in the DIG. Festival’s drummers' night. His band consists of all-round musicians with over 20 years' experience, at the DIG. Festival backed up by the unpredictable visionary and colourist Joonas Riippa.

Musician/composer/producer Jarmo Saari has performed in over 30 countries and on over 100 albums. He was awarded the Finland Prize 2012 in recognition of a significant career in arts and exceptional artistic achievement. His accomplishments include playing the guitar and several other instruments with as well as composing for Tero Saarinen, Jukka Perko, Tapiola Choir, Avanti!, Emma Salokoski, RSO, Meta4, Susanna Haavisto, Teppo Mäkynen, EBB, Esko Salminen, Mika Kaurismäki, Anna-Mari Kähärä, Trilok Gurtu, Pekka Kuusisto, Don Huonot, Jorma Hynninen, and Pepe Deluxe.

The new lineup will refine the experimental, lyrical, and hypnotic tones of Saari's solo project Jarmo Saari Solu into a ritualistic, volcanic, and colourful flow of rhythm.

8.30 PM, Camerata: Mika Kallio solo

Drummer Mika Kallio first trained to become a professional musician at Joensuu Conservatory. In 2002, he graduated from the Sibelius Academy Jazz Department. He has collaborated with the best Finnish jazz musicians, including Raoul Björkenheim, Mikko Innanen, Kari “Sonny” Heinilä, Kari Ikonen, Jukka Perko, Teemu Viinikainen, Verneri Pohjola, Uffe Krokfors, Iro Haarla, Jarmo Savolainen, and Manuel Dunkel. Internationally, Kallio has collaborated with Wadada Leo Smith, Tomasz Stanko, Sebastien Boisseau, John Lindberg, Matthieu Donarier, Vincent Courtois, JD Walter, Philippe Catherine, Marc Ducret, Staffan Svensson, and Peter Bernstein.

Mika Kallio has played on over 50 albums with various ensembles. In 2008, he released his first solo album, Mika Kallio, which presents his versatile timbres and courageous and creative imagination. A natural continuation of this album was Kallio Slaaki, an ensemble of three drummers, which released their debut album Polymania for Percussion in 2013.

Elektro GT

Elektro GT, established in 2013, is a jazz ensemble that savours its music with unusual electronic nuances and strong beats. Their first album, recorded at YLE, will be released in September 2014 by Texicalli Records.

Sid Hille's compositions provide perfect and beautiful frames to depart from and return to. In an exceptional mix of instruments the Sid Hille contemporary/jazz Collective offers a unique listening experience. Each time again - each time in a different way.

There is no borderline between jazz and contemporary classical music. There is only a small gap between mindsets, a tiny little opening of space for the NOW - a universe for the improvising musician. This is where the Sid Hille contemporary/jazz Collective operates. This is where the 'Zen Connection' happens. ('The Zen Connection' is the title of the band's first release from 2012.) Equipped with a firm set of musical abilities the improvising musician takes a jump, trusting his spontaneous musical ideas, responding to the surrounding environment of the other improvisers, creating a unique maze of musical structures that can never be reproduced the exact same way - only the HERE and NOW is true.

Jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton will perform in Helsinki in October. In his music Burton combines rock with jazz rhythm and harmony. Gary Burton is famous for his four-mallet technique that makes vibraphone sound like two or three people was playing it. Gary Burton taught himself to play the vibraphone and, at the age of 17, made his recording debut. During his over 50-year career Burton has collaborated with several top jazz artists, including Stan Getz, Chick Korea, Pat Metheny, Ástor Piazzola, B.B.King and Herbie Hancock.

After Gary announced his retirement from Berklee College of Music in 2003, he formed a new band, Gary Burton Quartet, and released album “Common Ground” in 2011. Last year the band released another album “Guided Tour” which has been acclaimed by critics.

Gary Burton’s lineup in Helsinki includes top musicians: Julian Lage (guitar), Jorge Roeder (bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums).

Saxophonist-composer Esa Pietilä's quartet Liberty Ship combines influences from modern art music with the untamable spirit of free jazz. A strong emphasis is on the skill of living and creating in the now. This group represents the most creative strain of Finnish jazz, which has also been noted outside the borders of Finland.

Liberty Ship, an avant-garde jazz quartet with saxophonist Esa Pietilä at the helm, goes on a five-concert tour around Finland. The anchor is dropped at Tampere Jazz Happening on November 1st.

Liberty Ship, founded in 2012, explores the deep waters of free jazz and improvised music. This group, led by veteran sax player and composer Esa Pietilä represents contemporary Finnish jazz at its most creative. The debut album Approaching came out on Eclipse Music in November 2013, and it was selected as one of the releases of the year by the New York Jazz Record Magazine.

Esa Pietilä (b. 1964), the captain of this fearless vessel, is known for his highly original style, with roots deep in the nutritious soil of free jazz and avant-garde. His experience as both saxophonist and composer ranges from solo concerts to big band line-ups, encompassing everything in between. During his career, he has also collaborated with some of the biggest names of improvised music, both Finnish and international.
