The Thing pushes musical boundaries with their passionate and original free jazz style. With their latest album, Boot! (The Thing Records, 2013), the power trio returns to their irresistibly raw, stripped down sound.

Takuya Kuroda and his group whip up some brilliant soul jazz. The warm trumpet expressions of this musical cosmopolitan are spiced up with elements of R&B and hip hop. His latest album, Rising Son, was released by the prestigious Blue Note Record label.

An unparalleled master of the Indian tabla drum, Zakir Hussain is a national treasure of his home country. His mesmerizing improvisations, astonishing musical intuition, and ability to thoroughly explore every nuance of his instrument make his performances an experience that is not to be missed! The concert starts with The Yrjö Award ceremony and the performance of the winner.

Kallio Slaaki fills the stage with various percussion instruments and takes their listeners on an awe-inspiring journey through exotic worlds of sound. These three top Finnish drummers exhaust every means of musical experimentation from meditative moods to torrential rhythms. Last year, this dynamic trio released their debut album, Polymania for Percussion (Fiasko Records, 2013), in vinyl format.

Bassist Jori Huhtala is a familiar figure at Tampere Jazz Happening, having played with Raoul Björkenheim Ecstasy as well as with Big Blue. This year, he brings along his own quintet consisting of his favorite musicians, masterfully interpreting Huhtala’s own compositions.

Traces of cinematic orchestrations and pop tunes melt together to form a sound that is at once beautiful and rugged, grooving and freely rhythmic – effectively combining old and new elements of jazz

Teddy’s West Coasters takes their listeners for a ride through the sunny days of 1950s and 60s West Coast jazz. Jazz standards and original compositions of drummer Teppo Mäkynen receive the best possible treatment by this octet of top Finnish musicians.

This ensemble bursts with the energy of performers who truly enjoy both playing and paying tribute to the traditions of jazz, bringing them airily alive in the moment.

Tamikrest is the top ensemble of the new generation of the Tuareg indigenous people of the Western region of the Sahara. The group’s relentless desert groove echoes the sand storms of Sahara, infused with the traditions of Western rock. At the same time, their music reflects the Tuareg’s fight for land and the challenges of an entire nation in the midst of social change.

Tamikrest (‘gathering’) calls for unity with their name, and the group’s crunchy and energetic rhythms leave a lasting impression. Last year, the ensemble released their third album, the praised Chatma (Glitterbeat, 2013), which rose to the top of the world music charts in Europe. This year, the group won the Songlines Music Awards category of “Best Band.”

Liberty Ship, an avant-garde jazz quartet with saxophonist Esa Pietilä at the helm, goes on a five-concert tour around Finland. The anchor is dropped at Tampere Jazz Happening on November 1st.

Liberty Ship, founded in 2012, explores the deep waters of free jazz and improvised music. This group, led by veteran sax player and composer Esa Pietilä represents contemporary Finnish jazz at its most creative. The debut album Approaching came out on Eclipse Music in November 2013, and it was selected as one of the releases of the year by the New York Jazz Record Magazine.

Esa Pietilä (b. 1964), the captain of this fearless vessel, is known for his highly original style, with roots deep in the nutritious soil of free jazz and avant-garde. His experience as both saxophonist and composer ranges from solo concerts to big band line-ups, encompassing everything in between. During his career, he has also collaborated with some of the biggest names of improvised music, both Finnish and international.
