Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim's eighth ECM album, Helsinki Songs, is a classic-in-the-making. It was with his ECM leader debut, Different Rivers, that Seim made an immediate impact on the jazz scene, with the album winning the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik as Album of the Year in 2001. Since then, the saxophonist has been heard on more than 20 ECM releases.

A natural improviser, Seim has ventured beyond early jazz playing to expand his palette via studies of Arabic music in Cairo. He has also explored Indian classical traditions. In recent years, the saxophonist recognized certain kinships that these traditions – with their scales, modes and melodic arabesques – have with the folk music of his native Norway, even as he has returned to the format of the classic jazz quartet. 

This exquisite concert in Sello Hall will feature tracks from Helsinki songs, as well as new material by Seim.

Award-winning Norwegian trumpet player and composer Mathias Eick visits G Livelab Helsinki and joins forces with inventive Finnish big band Sointi Jazz Orchestra. Eick has released several albums on the mighty ECM record label and collaborated with numerous top artists and bands, from the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to Chick Korea. This unique concert features brand new adaptations of Eick's compositions, highlighting the best aspects of the collaboration.
