Helsingin Juhlaviikot: The James Hunter Six, Jo' Buddy & Down Home King III,Huvila-teltta, helsinki19.8. At 19:00
The James Hunter Six (www)
Jo Buddy & Down Home King III

The music of British James Hunter is a mix of urban American soul and rhythm ’n’ blues of a world gone by: the legacy of Sam Cooke and Ray Charles. It is, therefore, not at all surprising that Hunter and his killer band found their spiritual home under the protection of the legendary New York soul record label Daptone. Their praised new album Hold on! came out earlier this year.
Even though the influences are clear, Hunter’s own voice is instantly recognisable. His gritty singing is framed by a good-natured swing with a sense of humour as well as tight and controlled guitar playing, which occasionally bursts into wild blues solos. Hunter’s songs always carry a touch of playfulness.
His intoxicatingly-energetic gigs earned Hunter a cult status in the 1990s. His fans include Van Morrison, who instantly hired him to appear on his tour upon hearing him live. The men have since frequently featured on each other’s albums.
The evening kicks off with the domestic duo of Jo’ Buddy & Down Home King III and their music inspired by American roots music. With decades of experience under their belt, the rocking duo opens the 2016 Huvila season in style.
Jo’ Buddy & Down Home King III starts at 7 pm. The James Hunter Six starts at 8.30 pm.
Doors: 5.30 pm.
