Kuára

Trygve Seim: saxophones, Samuli Mikkonen: grand piano and Markku Ounaskari: drums
On their 2010 debut recording Kuára – Psalms and Folk songs (ECM
Records 2116), the Kuára trio explored the melodic universe of Fenno-
Ugrian folk music and old Russian religious hymns, featuring the
expressive, spontaneous playing of Norwegian trumpet player and
singer Per Jørgensen.
For the past year, the trio is working with another strong and
imaginative Norwegian musician – sax player Trygve Seim, equally
rootsy and intensive in musical expression, but with a distinctive
element of lyrical cool in his sound.
For the Finnish members of the trio, drummer Markku Ounaskari and
pianist Samuli Mikkonen, the new constellation is partly a return to the
open-form playing and spontaneous improvising that they initially
started with as a duo, but also a move into a space defined by
completely new forces of musical gravity.
In their 2014 concerts, the trio will play original compositions tailored
for the current lineup – with these fresh musical ingredients, the Kuára
trio is heading towards new horizons.
