This year it is 100 years since the bassist / composer Charles Mingus was born. The band consisting of domestic jazz tops OH YEAH will celebrate this by performing Mingus’ music at a jaZZanti concert at the restaurant Laulumiehet on 14 June.

Charles Mingus (1922-1979) was an American jazz bassist, composer, orchestra conductor and pianist who is considered one of the most important musicians in the history of jazz.

The band wants to support heirs who dominate Mingus’ musical heritage, and part of each gage will be given to Let My Children Hear Music.

This transborder quartet will present a two-hour jazz program of original compositions and a few revisited standards.

Benjamin Faconnier is a trumpet player, singer and music composer born and raised in Perpignan, south of France. His compositions are mostly inspired by the powerful music of African-American masters such as Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and Miles Davis, or yet by contemporary musicians like Ambrose Akinmusire and Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah. Upon meeting in Helsinki jam sessions, the musicians from this quartet decided to further their collaboration and share their commitment to this improvisational music.
The African influences of Benjamin’s ancestors from Reunion Island (south-est Indian ocean) are never too far, and he always finds a way to include them in the expression of his own music in a complex mix of African-American, European and Reunionese Creole music.

This concert will be a way for Benjamin to express his own vision of the world, love and struggles through the art of music and improvisation.
