Helsinki Jazz ry in cooperation with Savoy Theatre, we will organize a versatile memorial concert for Teppo Hauta-aho on June 9, featuring a large group of Teppo’s artist friends from different stages of life history and ensembles: pianists Eero Ojanen, Meri Louhos and Carita Holmström (vocals), saxophonists Eero Koivistoinen, Junnu Aaltonen, Mikko Innanen and Harri Sjöström, guitarists Kalle Kalima and Jukka Kääriäinen, clarinettist Heikki Nikula, drummers Reiska Laine and Olavi Louhivuori, dancer-choreographer Reijo Kela and bassists Uffe Krokfors, Ville Herrala, Antti Lötjönen, Dan Styffe, Fanni Hoppari, Kaapo Kangas, Tapio Lydecken, Marja-Helena Ojanperä, Maukka Siirala, Eero Tikkanen and Juho Vikman.

 

Teppo Hauta-aho (1941-2021) was a Finnish double bass player and composer. He was a distinguished musician in the circles of classical music, jazz and improvisational music. Hauta-aho composed a lot of orchestral and chamber music, and his production for double bass is extensive. Hauta-aho played in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of the National Opera until he became a freelance artist in 1999.

 

Hauta-aho played e.g. with Cecil Taylor, Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, Yoko Miura and Marilyn Crispell, and in bands such as the Tuohi Quartet, Kalmisto-Klangi, Quintet Moderne, Trio Nueva Finlandia, Töölö Bassotrio and Olavi Trio.

 

The concert is a unique combination from many aspects of music.

Welcome to the jazz jam sessions at the sunny terrace of Konepaja Biergarten (Bruno Granholmin kuja 1, 00510 Helsinki) – free entrance!

Each houseband is an unique mixture of UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s musicians and other professional jazz musicians, combined with rising start talents from the jazz departments of Sibelius Academy and Metropolia.

Jazz Jam & Brew is organised by UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Konepaja Biergarten, The jazz department of Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, Metropolia Music and Pop & Jazz Conservator and it is supported by MES (Musiikin edistämissäätiö).

Ethnojazz band Ilkka Arola Sound Tagine creatively mixes different music cultures in their music and creates addictive rhythmic tapestries. The music of the five-member ethnojazz ensemble led by trumpet player Ilkka Arola combines strong drama, mysticism of the Middle East and the spacious ethereal nature of Nordic jazz.
