Jazz Finland Live

Guitarist Olli Hirvonen and oboist Saku Mattila have collaborated for almost a decade now. New York resident, internationally acclaimed Hirvonen and accomplished musician, now brass band conductor Mattila are united in their desire to avoid musical stagnation. In their concert the duo combine jazz, classical and folk music with free improvisation, concentrating on how the music is played instead of how the composition is labeled, thus aligning perfectly with the spirit of Viapori Jazz.

You want fresh… we give you fresh! Garnering well-earned attention, Milo & Moses is a project of two teenagers, Milo Mäkelä and Moses Kuloniemi, to which only one driver’s license -aged musician has been accepted, the bass player Jon Pettersson. Boys have collected much acclaim for the maturity of their first recording, with another one already in the works. The audience of Viapori Jazz has now a unique chance to come and hear the groove-jazz of the youngest recording artists of Finnish jazz!

In the centenary year of Finland, it is natural to cast an eye on the flagpoles of Finnishness, one of which is without a doubt Piae Cantiones, arguably the first Finnish published book of songs. The first version came out 435 years ago and later when our nation was seeking independence, it was held as a proof of the spiritual aspirations of the Finns. The music of the concert is based on the themes of the material but have been ascended by the one-of-a-kind pianist Seppo Kantonen to new heights. To be expected is a version update of pious songs, a fantasy of medieval themes by Kantonen and other personal musicians of the orchestra.

Having versioned hymns in their own accord, saxophone master Jukka Perko and Tom Cruise -famed singer-actor Samuli Edelmann have finally joined their forces and will perform their art for the August Viapori Jazz audience. The Suomenlinna lighthouse-church will witness sacral spiritual music and instrumentalism, versions of hymns and for example compositions of Toni Edelmann from Vaiheet -album of Samuli Edelmann. The somber journey towards the final concert in Tenalji von Fersen begins here.
