Pasquale Grasso’s (b. 1988) stunning virtuosity can be heard in his guitar playing, which is influenced by his pianist idol, Bud Powell. Drawing from the jazz tradition, the Italian Grasso has won several music awards, the most recent being first place in the 2015 Wes Montgomery International Jazz Guitar Competition in New York. In the same year, Grasso released his debut album “Reflections of Me”.
Fredrik Kronkvist Afro Cuban Supreme featuring Jason Marsalis & Eliel Lazo
The Helsinki Music Centre Black Box spotlights the Swedish alto saxophonist Fredrik Kronkvist (b. 1975) and his Afro Cuban Supreme ensemble, which combines Afro-Cuban rhythms, fresh arrangements of jazz standards, John Coltrane’s music, and their own original compositions into a celebration of rhythm. New Orleans drummer Jason Marsalis, the youngest of the famous Marsalis jazz family, and the Cuban conga virtuoso Eliel Lazo form the core of the band’s rhythm section.

DIG. Festival is the main autumn event of the University of the Arts Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy and its jazz department. This autumn, the stage will be taken by pianist Aaron Goldberg, singer-guitarist Joyce Moreno, guitarist Pasquale Grasso, and saxophonist Fredrik Kronkvist. During their visit, the festival stars will teach students in the Sibelius Academy’s jazz department.
