There is no shortage of swing when Finland's most legendary folk music ensemble JPP joins forces with vibraphonist Panu Savolainen, better known from the jazz side. The repertoire, which combines jazz improvisation with the Kaustinen fiddle playing, consists not only of Panu Savolainen's more recent compositions, but also of JPP's classic pieces as well as Charlie Parker repertoire performed in 2020. The new album by Panu Savolainen & JPP will be released in October 2023.
Vibraphonist Panu Savolainen is known as a versatile and expressive musician and composer in jazz, classical and other acoustic music. He rose to the attention of the Finnish music world with his trio Herd, founded in 2009, and especially Herd and singer Aili Ikonen's joint project Jazzbasilli.
JPP (formerly Järvelän Pikkupelimannit) has been known as a reformer and messenger of Finnish folk music for over 40 years. JPP was founded in 1982 in Kaustinen, the capital of Finnish violin. In addition to the fiddle, JPP's playing consists of double bass and harmonium. The band´s musical roots go all the way to 1700's, and originates from the musical heritage of the Järvelä family. From this heritage comes JPP´s suprising musical style. The band has extensively toured the continents of the world and released 11 albums.
