In guitarist Teemu Viinikainen's solo concert, the warm tones of the acoustic orchestra guitar combined with modern technology create a stunning and expansive sonic landscape, which has garnered international recognition. Expressiveness, groove, and virtuosity are central elements in Viinikainen's playing, but the predominant feelings when listening to him are a strong sense of presence, sensitivity, and the beautiful sound of the guitar.
Viinikainen's artistic achievements include being a part of the esteemed U-Street All Stars band, as well as receiving an Emma Award nomination for Best Jazz Album in 2017 with the Teemu Viinikainen III ensemble. However, perhaps one of Viinikainen's greatest accomplishments is his demand as the trusted guitarist for several top-tier bands. He has successfully performed with international luminaries such as Joe Lovano, Vince Mendoza, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Tim Hagans, and Jeff "Tain" Watts.
Teemu Viinikainen released his first solo guitar album, Songs of Silence, in November 2022. The album features solo arrangements of well-known compositions by figures like Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, all recorded in a single take, complete with samples and loops.

Tampere Jazz Happening offers a wide variety of styles and shades of jazz on both sides of the Tullikamari square. This year's country in the spotlight, Germany, is widely featured in the programme. At the opening concert, three younger generation bands present themselves to the Finnish audience. During the weekend, more German groups perform at the main concerts in the Pakkahuone.
As top names from the United States, three American jazz artists of the hip-hop generation take the stage at Pakkahuone: saxophonist Marcus Strickland, vocalist José James and vibraphonist Joel Ross. This time, the furthermost artists arrive from Australia and South Africa. The international line-up is completed by some of the most exciting names in European jazz right now. On Friday and Saturday, six bands are playing Finnish jazz at Telakka. The weekend's late nights end at the Klubi, with performances by London Afrobeat Collective and French-Ethiopian Kutu.
On Sunday, the festival concludes at Telakka, where German trombonist Janning Trumann and his band will play the closing concert.

The Vapaat Äänet tour, which brings the most interesting names of European jazz to Finland, arrives in Turku led by multi-instrumentalist Sarah Murcia!
Bassist and composer Sarah Murcia is a distinctive multi-talent of the French jazz scene, whose career includes a variety of experiences since the 1990s. The playing field of the Eyeballing quartet, founded in 2017, stretches from electro-jazz to alternative pop through fascinating minimalism. The precisely composed songs live organically with four master players and improvisers. Playing alongside Murcia in the quartet are her long-time playing partners saxophonist Olivier Py and pianist Benoît Delbecq, who also handles the rhythm machine. Tuba virtuoso François Thuillier completes the band.
