Drummer Jaska Lukkarinen's new solo project One For Joe is a tribute to jazz drummer Philly Joe Jones, who is best known as the drummer of the Miles Davis Quintet from 1955 to 1958. However, the concert mainly features music recorded by Jones for other artists, such as Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd and J.R. Montrose between 1956 and 1961. The songs performed contain inspiring melodic and rhythmic elements that build a bridge from the 1950s to today.
Philly Joe Jones is known as one of the most used accompanists of the hard bop era. One For Joe is essentially related to Lukkarinen's own artistic doctorate, where the focus is on the drummer's accompaniment and ways to create musical energy. The concert offers unstoppable swing, energetic accompaniment and imaginative soloism and ensemble playing inspired by the 1950s. In addition, there will be stories and anecdotes from the career of Philly Joe Jones.
