With its overt lyricism, strong themes and a sense of perpetual melodic invention, Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim's Helsinki Songs album published by ECM in 2018 quickly identified itself as a modern classic.
Themes of dedication run through Seim's Helsinki Songs album, a set of tunes composed – for the most part – in the Finnish capital, and radiating tributes in many directions. At G Livelab he is rejoined by his multinational quartet of top european jazz musicians: Kristjan Randalu on piano, Anders Jormin on bass and Markku Ounaskari on drums.
The evening is opened by Sooäär/Yaralyan/Ounaskari. Estonian guitarist Jaak Sooäär, Armenian/Estonian double bassist Ara Yaralyan and Finnish drummer Markku Ounaskari established the trio in spring 2016. The music of the trio is mostly focused on melody. The trio also performs Armenian music and some improvisations on themes by J. S. Bach.
