Rituals are the mysterious obsessions, neuroses and unspoken behavioral rules of our everyday lives, but mostly they're unconscious everyday actions. But the power of ritual is that we are also able to go beyond everyday consciousness, and this is what Fire! Orchestra deliberately seeks to create.

At the centre of the band, which operates at the interface of Free Jazz, psychedelic rock and noise, is the bestial trio of saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Johan Berthling and drummer Andreas Werliin, whose unrelenting musical manifesto may not be easily approached. Umeå native Gustafsson has been seen many times performing at Tampere Jazz Happening: he is the uncrowned King of Scandinavian Free Jazz, whose dynamism varies from aggressive power blowing to a silent whispering. The music of the Fire! Orchestra exerts vigor, will and strength, but they understand that it remains true only in contrast. In this time and place, the Fire! Orchestra comprises 13 musicians. It is going to be a real tractor-pulling show of Free Jazz!

The Jamie Baum Septet's fresh Bridges album literally builds bridges. The album goes on a long journey that began life as spontaneous and casual stories but was originally inspired by the legendary Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. A native of Connecticut's Pidgeport, one of Baum's earliest loves was Jewish music. In co-operation with the Guggenheim Foundation, Baum has studied links between different kinds of Jewish music, Arabian, Middle Eastern and South Asian music. The three-part Honoring Nepal: The Shiva Suite at the center of the album was ordered by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art in New York and at the same it is Baum's tribute to the culture that has given so much to her own life, and to the world.

Based on her findings, Baum combines and creates a common language, a shared humanity. There is a good tool for doing this: Harmony. Listen to how the horns blow to the same microphone. And what do they do? The polyphonic and cultured musical conversations of the band get their last finishing touch from Baum's rhetorically wise flute.

"Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future". This is the motto of The Art Ensemble of Chicago. The 50-year-old pioneering band will bring African-American music to the present, and if we believe these gentlemen, they will also carry it to the future. It's no shame to start arguing, since the story of creation, the ritual and the lustration - all the levels are really involved with The Art Ensemble of Chicago in a unique musical delivery.

The ever-modern veteran band has always separated from their colleagues with their spiritual attitudes and has been at the forefront of creating a fusion between jazz, Western art music and African tribal music. From the legendary lineup, Roscoe Mitchell, the well-known saxophonist with a successful solo career, is the only remaining member. Drummer and core member Famoudou Don Moye joined the band in 1970, and is also playing tonight. The experience of life, an unprecedentedly extensive musical education and a unique narrative create the scene for an incredible musical adventure. Drop the partitures! The Ego-fading improvisation and brotherly multi-instrumentalism creates a message that is dependent on the listener, but illustrated with spectacular and authentic musical insights.

At the beginning of 2000, Emma Salokoski came to public attention with the band Quintessence, which represented the new Millennial Spirit in Helsinki. Since then, Salokoski has transitioned to a solo career and has been one of the most sought-after Finnish jazz singers, due to her wide-ranging expression and her unique voice.

Salokoski and the Ilmiliekki Quartet, made up of the cream of the Finnish jazz, released the album Vi sålde våra hemman, almost 10 years ago, which put the poetry of Edith Södergran and Elmer Diktonius to music. This autumn will see the release of a new album by the group, continuing the same theme but adding the lyrics of contemporary poets.

The idea of ​​interpreting folk tunes in the language of jazz is not new in Finland, but one rarely hears those songs played in this way. Besides the old folk songs and pieces written by people like Sibelius there are included more compositions by the band members. The music of Ilmiliekki Quartet moves forward in a leisurely but airy way, emphasizing the ambition of groovable arrangements.
