This month's jaZZanti concert is the launch show of Heikki Sarmanto's new album, Open Skies

Heikki Sarmanto is known not only as a composer genius but also a talented improviser and solo pianist. In the latter case he is both a percussionist, a bassist, an accompanist and a soloist at the same time. A few years ago, Sarmanto was asked to record new solo renditions of his own songs but, instead, he decided to turn to his own musical schoolbook - The Great American Songbook. This project spawned more than 1,200 recorded pieces, of which 22 were selected on his new album, Open Skies.

This album is an expedition into pianism and Sarmanto's own musical philosophy. It also tracks the journey that the pianist has made into wilder and vaster soundscapes; indeed, the listener will hear the echo of space and time. The music of Open Skies is spontanous, free and at times extravagant improvisation. All pieces have been put on the album completely unedited.
