Jazz From The Silver Screen,Kulttuurikeskus Caisa, helsinki4.2. At 19:00

Jazz From The Silver Screen - a night of
great music from the movies.

This evening is about the music that started life on the big screen, featuring works that are regarded as jazz ‘standards’ today, as well as interesting and eclectic selections from film scores interpreted through the vernacular of jazz.

Jazz and film have been strongly interconnected since the first feature-length “talking picture” in 1927. Such jazz greats as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday were featured throughout early Hollywood movies and biographies of musicians like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Charlie Parker, along with fictional portrayals of the jazz world, are a Hollywood staple. And film scores have frequently used jazz scores, either composed expressly or compiled from existing sources. Also Soviet films were famous for their songs. Music by Isaak Dunayevsky, ranged from classical pieces to popular jazz. Mikael Tariverdiev, Vladimir Dashkevich, Georgy Garanian - these are all the great names of the Soviet Jazz.

The seats will be arranged so that you can listen to the concert, while sitting and enjoying some drinks and maybe even snacks at the table of your
choice.

Having released their newest album, Hurmos, at the beginning of December, the instrumental trio will now hit the road on a Finnish tour!

Known as a trio, the band will temporarily grow into a six-piece art collective with visual artist Emma Luukkala, lighting designer JereSuontausta and sound engineer Mika Savolainen joining its ranks specifically for the tour.

Formed in 2011, Virta is a Helsinki-based instrumental trio whose unique sound is composed of elements drawn from the traditions of jazz, post-rock and electronic music. Their 2012 debut Tales from the Deep Waters (Tourist Information) sold out and garnered plenty of acclaim from both critics and fans of jazz. Their fresh sound and unusual instrumentation have attracted attention outside Finland as well; and, indeed, Virta were invited to perform at the prestigious Jazzahead! Festival, to be held at Bremen, Germany, in April 2017.

Heikki Selamo: guitar, vocals, electronics
