Sibis Alumni Big Band & Darcy James Argue, composer and bandleader

The Sibelius Academy Jazz Alumni Big Band performs with the young Canadian jazz composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue (b. 1975).

The Sibelius Academy Jazz Alumni Big Band performs with the young Canadian jazz composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue (b. 1975). In 2011 and 2014, Argue and his band Secret Society were nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. Darcy James Argue’s compositions differ from the big band music that most people feel is traditional. He mixes minimalism, contemporary classical, indie rock and jazz styles into one giant melting pot which ultimately surprises his listeners. Argue's music has a great amount of intensity that pushes it forward to new directions. In his compositions, Argue avoids standard instrumentation and uses avant-garde instruments from melodicas to guitars equipped with a loop pedal and special effects to support the sound of his orchestra.
