Ilmiliekki Quartet first won the audience over in 2002 by winning the inter-Scandinavian Young Nordic Jazz Comets competition. In 2004 they were selected as the Young Artists of Finland Festivals and the trumpeter Verneri Pohjola as the Artist of the Year at Pori Jazz Festival.
