Peela consists of some of the finest upcoming jazz musicians in Helsinki, centering around the compositions of guitarist Johannes Granroth.

They draw influences from jazz, funk rock and neo soul to a blend where improvisation, powerful melodies, lush harmony and groovy rhythms play a central role. Their music is mostly instrumental, though at times enhanced by Maja Mannila’s virtuosic singing.

The band was founded in 2016 and along with actively gigging for nearly four years, Peela has released their debut album Layers in 2018, as well as their second album/ep Stepping Stones in 2020. They have managed to catch the attention of acclaimed musicians such as pianist Iiro Rantala, giving them a push in the right direction.

Jazz Finland is a national service organisation dedicated to the promotion of jazz music and jazz culture in Finland. On Friday, April 1, a rare treat will be heard at Logomo, when the Ålandian pianist virtuoso Vladimir “Vova” Shafranov and jazz professor Jukkis Uotila will perform together for the first time in years.

The masters will take the stage at the invitation of Jussi Fredriksson, the artistic director of Jazz City Turku, and Shafranov and Uotila will also perform together at the Åland Sea Jazz event in Mariehamn in August. In Turku, the band is complemented by Johnny Åman, a younger bassist who is one of Sweden's sought-after jazz musicians.

Vibraphonist Severi Pyysalo (b. 1967) has been at the top of Finland for three decades. He made himself known to the general public at the Pori Jazz in 1984 at the latest, when both singer Sarah Vaughan and Paquito D'Rivera asked her to perform with her. Since then, Pyysalo has given concerts both in Finland and abroad in various ensembles, perhaps the best known of which is Perko-Pyysalo Poppoo.

In addition to jazz music, Pyysalo has also composed for Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, and composed music for Grimm's fairy tales. Pyysalo has received the Yrjö Prize (1988) and in 1993 he was elected European Jazz Soloist of the Year.
