HIETSU IS HAPPENING! NRO 11: 1955,Hietsun paviljonki, helsinki10.4. At 19:00

Hietsu is Happening! enters into world’s new political settings by recalling cold war state at its worst. Because none of the performers was born in the night’s theme year 1955 it is necessary to use artistic licence.
Cellist and diversified performer Juho Laitinen interprets John Cage’s classic “Speech 1955” composed for five radios and a newsreader. Pianist Seppo Kantonen, prophetically born nine days before John F. Kennedy’s assassination, eases the show of DJ H-rusT and DJ D-whyT D. The evening ends with Laitinen, Kantonen and event’s curators Petri Kumela, Mikko Innanen and Antti Lötjönen examining atmospheres of Albert Einstein’s and Charlie Parker’s death year through 21st century’s futuristic viewpoint.

Teppo Mäkynen is not only a virtuoso drummer but also a talented composer and a true visionary of music. As UMO and Mäkynen join their forces, we are guaranteed a true Mäkynen extravaganza.
The programme consists mainly of brand-new big band arrangements of Mäkynen’s compositions. In addition to them, we will hear carefully chosen bits from his big band portfolio. The drummer’s groove and spectacular mastery of ride cymbal is certainly met with some foot tapping. Mäkynen’s use of electronic equipment makes the live concert experience even more exciting.
The Finnish jazz folk know Teppo Mäkynen from the groups The Five Corners Quintet, Jo Stance and Teddy’s West Coasters, to name a few. He is also a sought-after record producer and DJ in the field of Finnish jazz.
