In this concert, Jyväskylä Big Band pays homage to the late sax legend Micheal Brecker (1949-2007), one of the best-known American jazz saxophonists. We will be in for material from UMO Jazz Orchestra and Brecker's collab album "Live in Helsinki 1995" and from the repertory of Brecker Brothers. Michael Brecker was a 15-time Grammy-winner who recorded twenty solo albums and performed with the likes of Chet Baker, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Don Cherry, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, Charles Mingus, Joni Mitchell, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Steely Dan, Tony Williams, Frank Zappa.

Brecker's big shoes will be filled by Manuel Dunkel (1971-), who actually performed alongside Brecker in the 1995 concert. Dunkel is one of the most notable Finnish saxophonists, known for his melodic style and several long-standing groups, including Espoo Big Band, Jukka Perko Hurmio, Manuel Dunkel Quartet, Platypus Ensemble and UMO. He was awarded with the prestigious Yrjö Jazz Prize by the Finnish Jazz Federation in 2011. 

Jyväskylä Big Band is comprised of local professional musicians and specialises in performing new music across genre categories by both experienced, established artists and young promising stars. Ilkka Mäkitalo has been the conductor and Artistic Director of the group since 1995.
