A multicultural, changing, rugged, tough and tireless hot spot of creativity. Kinshasa, the third largest city in Africa, is all of this. This is also true of Mbongwana Star and its unique musical concoction reflecting life in the modern day Congo.

From the ruins left by the 2013 breakup of Staff Benda Bilili, who also sold out Hulvila Festival Tent when they played in Finland, rises Mbongwana Star, a group that steers clear of easy compartmentalization and disrupts the clichés of African music. Yakala ‘Coco’ Ngambali, Nsituvuidi ‘Theo’ Nzonza and producer Liam Farrell have built a sound machine based on Congolese rumba and soukous traditions that generates raw, minimalistic urban energy.

The rhythmic evening is started off with Kari Ikonen’s latest group, the Trio Toffa, which features a fusion of afro-pop-jazz.

Trio Toffa starts at 7 pm. Mbongwana Star starts at 8.30 pm.
