Jukka Eskola, unarguably one of Finland’s most sought-after jazz musicians, brings his new band, Soul Trio, to Kalkkiranta with a freshly released debut EP under their belt. Drawing from the rich heritage of 1950s and 60s jazz, the outfit sees drummer Teppo Mäkynen and organist Mikko Helevä by Eskola’s side. Charismatic vocalist Anni Elif, known from the unstoppable trio pop-jazz trio Elifantree, presents her collaborative project with the duo Harpalyke. The group mixes verse by Edith Södergran with electro-acoustic, even futuristic, soundscapes. This year’s festival will be closed by a premiering collaborative project of Panu Savolainen, the artistic director of the festival, and JPP or Järvelä Pikkupelimannit, one of the household names of Finnish folk music. Founded in 1982, this incredibly swinging outfit will be performing their guest leader’s new compositions, written specifically for this project.
