Jazz Finland Live

Jazz-Espa: Joonas Haavisto Trio, Virva Quintet,Espan lava, helsinki2.8. At 16:00

keikka

The Finnish Jazz Federation warmly welcomes you to the 17th Jazz-Espa Festival. The two-week concert series sees twenty Finnish jazz acts entertain music-lovers this summer on the Espa Stage in the Esplanadi Park. All Jazz-Espa concerts are accessible, free of charge and open to all ages. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Finnish Jazz Federation, Jazz-Espa dresses up to a Jazz Federation's colours and turns up the volume by presenting as many as three large orchestras this year. The crown jewel of these big-band-sized ensembles is of course UMO Jazz Orchestra.

Tue 2nd of August at 4pm Joonas Haavisto Trio

Joonas Haavisto – p, Antti Lötjönen – b, Joonas Riippa – dr

Oku is the third album of Joonas Haavisto Trio. The album is released both in Europe and in Japan in the spring. The Japanese word oku means an inner state, the path that the musicians have taken for the past ten years of playing together. Pianist Haavisto’s compositions buzz like Tokyo nightlife and hum like the rugged Finnish wilderness. Echos of Finland’s national composer Sibelius’ work can be detected too.

Tue 2nd of August at 5.30pm Virva Quintet (FI/EE)

Virva Immonen – voc, Keio Vutt – sax, Britta Virves – p, Siim Usin – b, Karl-Juhan Laanesaar – dr

Hailing from both sides of the pond, the Helsinki-Tallinn combo delightfully mixes jazz tradition with outspoken lyrics, both penned by singer Virva Immonen. The group released their debut album Fly in February. Vutt, Virver, Usin and Laanesaar all represent the young and aspiring generation of artists, who brilliantly reflect the open-mindedness and awareness of the contemporary Estonian jazz.

Sounding as both a lute and viol orchestra at the same time, the Omniwerk is an astonishing instrument based on the drawings of the great Leonardo Da Vinci. Aki Rissanen plunges into the world of Renaissance music, performing compositions from the repertories of Guillaume de Machaut and Carlo Gesualdo.
