The by now traditional Christmas concert tour of UMO will this year be headlining leading Finnish artist Anna Puu. The Christmas tour will span two weeks in November and December, with concerts at Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki and further afield in Vantaa, Porvoo, Hämeenlinna, Jyväskylä, Pori and Kotka.
The repertoire will feature some of the traditional and most beloved Christmas songs and also a few of Anna Puu’s own Christmas favourites will be heard. The arrangements have been written with church acoustics and atmosphere in mind.
UMO is conducted by Kirmo Lintinen.

Jussi Lampela & Verneri Pohjola: Before the Face of the Sea
Composer Jussi Lampela and trumpet player Verneri Pohjola lead their orchestra to create a live soundtrack for the Finnish silent movie “Before the Face of the Sea” directed by Teuvo Puro in 1926. First featured at the Loud Silents festival in Tampere this is the Helsinki debut for the orchestral movie experience. The group of artists alone make this an event to look forward to.

The year 2015 is the 100th anniversary of the wonderful Édith Piaf. To honor the jubilee year, Culture Salon’s stage is taken over by Tia Cohen and L’orchestre Noir with their
anniversary show. Conductor Tuomo Wäinölä leads the orchestra of five musicians.

Sointi Jazz Orchestra, a 17-piece led by the promising composer-arranger Rasmus Soini (b. 1990), will perform their big band version of the classic Christmas play, Star Boys’ Singing Procession, thrice in the Helsinki metropolitan area this Christmas. Soini and the group’s drummer Siiri Partanen have not only rearranged the well-known Christmas favourites but also composed some entirely new material for their take on the play. Singers Kalle Ruusukallio, Lauri Mikkola, Juuso Waris and Minna Tuuliainen will feature on vocals and in the roles of the Star Boys. The group has also worked with costume designer Sanna Niskanen and visual designer Juha Koivusalo on the project.
The idea of reshaping the 200-year musical tradition came from drummer Partanen. “I was never a huge fan of the traditional version, which might be why I wanted to do something new with it”, Soini says. ”Star Boys’ Singing Procession is a strong brand; it’s always there at Christmas but nobody has ever dared to put a creative finger on it. Our version has jestingly been dubbed as the 21st century Snowman – this version will stand the test of time!”

Mr. Innanen’s 12-member band had its first performance at Koko Jazz Club in November 2012 and after that they have enchanted their audiences in Tampere Jazz Happening, Korppoo Sea Jazz, the Vossa Jazz-festival in Norway as well as the Moers Festival in Germany. Innanen’s strong, multi-faceted compositions give us a peak into the many sides of a saxophonist’s career. They also bring out all the sounds and voices in the 12-man group, also leaving room for improvisation.
In the concert on the 10th of December, Innanen will play songs already familiar from previous gigs. He has also promised to premiere his new megalomaniac piece of music about the ancient Frygians.

Pop/jazz music archive JAPA celebrates its 25th anniversary at Helsinki's Lavaklubi. On stage some of the biggest figures of Finnish music life, performing some of the juiciest archival treasures.
Pearls of Finnish jazz will be performed by Eero Koivistoinen, Olli Ahvenlahti, Tomi Parkkonen and Wade Mikkola. Also on stage violin quartet Lumir and Janne. The night will culminate in a jam session, featuring a number of artists from over JAPA's history, including Jussi Raittinen, Jaska Harjula and Klaus Järvinen.
