In November, UMO hosts as a soloist one of its founding members, Juhani “Junnu” Aaltonen, who turns 80 in December. Junnu and UMO celebrate their joint 120th birthday with a series of concerts.

Aaltonen (b. 1935) is one of the most important tenor sax and flute players in the history of Finnish jazz. The veteran musician, sometimes called the “Finnish Coltrane”, started out playing jazz, moving on to fusion and, lately, to primarily church concerts. He returned to jazz with a bang when his comeback album Mother Tongue won the Jazz Emma award in 2003. He’s still an active musician.

The concert is a part of the UMO’s 40th anniversary concert series and consists entirely of Finnish composition by e.g. Iro Haarla, Outi Tarkiainen, Mikko Hassinen and Henrik Otto Donner. The concert also features a premiere written especially for this celebratory event by Artturi Rönkä. Kirmo Lintinen will conduct the orchestra.
