Joonatan Rautio & Janne Maarala

keikka

Fresh off a plane from Portugal, jazz saxophonist and Sibelius Academy MA Joonatan Rautio has been sparking audiences internationally for more than a decade with his signature tenor sound. This past winter, he played to a packed weekend in Storyville as the band leader for jazz singing sensation James Tormé. He will take the crowd at Rupla through a selection of lighthearted jazz and swing tunes backed by pianist Janne Maarala.

The venue will be the new, quickly growing cultural space Rupla, Helsinginkatu 16 (just across Fleminginkatu from Alepa). This hybrid indie boutique-art gallery-café has grown quite an audience since its opening in winter for its eye-catching art exhibitions, its décor of vintage furniture, its tasty Sunday brunch and a variety of live events including dance performances, children's programs and more recently morning yoga classes set to the music of Nick Cave.

The Kallio Kipinöi Culture Festival, my partners in the Helsinki Traditional Jazz Dance Society and I look forward to adding these two concerts to the launch year of this very unique venue. Dancing shoes welcome, there will be space to put them to good use.

Discount tickets (7 EUR) will be sold in advance with a message of reservation and bank transfer through the Helsinki Traditional Jazz Dance Society (messages can be addressed to Malin Grahn-Wilder via their Facebook page or helsinki.traditionaljazzdance@gmail.com). Entry at the door is available on the day of each concert for 10 EUR (cash or cards accepted).

Ilmiliekki Quartet,Jyväskylän yliopisto, jyväskylä12.11. At 19:00

keikka

Ilmileikki Quartet, one of the best-loved of Finland’s contemporary jazz groups, possesses the rare talent of appealing to audiences across genre categories. Their anticipated fourth album, All Dead, will be out in early November and presents a good occasion for the group to hit the road on a Finnish tour.

Composed of some of the most charismatic younger-generation jazzers, Ilmiliekki’s concerts have been few and far between in recent years. For over a decade the group has been able to create exceptionally creative and expressive music, which springs from shared musical values – shared courage and openness – and a shared vision to work as one entity. This tight-knit, Teosto-awarded quartet moves irrespective of genre and geographical boundaries.
