Jazz Finland Live
Jazz Finland Festival, Panu Savolainen Solo,Levykauppa Digelius, helsinki21.9. At 14:30

Panu Savolainen (b. 1990) ranks among the top prospects in the Finnish jazz scene. Despite his young age, Savolainen has already gained attention especially with his own combo HERD. A noteworthy personal, early accolade for Savolainen was the ”Artist of the Year” selection by Finland’s premiere jazz fest Pori Jazz Festival in 2010. What makes Savolainen a unique jazz player is his background as a classical percussionist. That being said, his playing is a fresh combination of no-nonsense swing and technical finesse, always serving the music at hand.
At the moment Savolainen is touring with HERD and vocalist Aili Ikonen, and hosting his own Panurama club with different guests each month. Since 2014, he is the Artistic Director of Kalkkiranta Jazz Festival, following pianist Iiro Rantala. He is also preparing for the 100th anniversary year of a late Finnish composer Toivo Kärki whose compositions he is performing with a jazz trio as well as with chamber orchestras in 2015.
The Jazz Finland festival sets Savolainen to an exciting and intimate surroundings, when he is to play solo concert at Digelius, the most famous jazz record store in Helsinki. Digelius is conveniently located in Viiskulma, the Five Corners’, which is the birthplace of the new wave of ’suomijazz’.
