Åland Sea Jazz: Manuel Dunkel Standards Trio,MERIKORTTELI, maarianhamina6.8. At 19:00

Manuel Dunkel Standards Trio

Manuel Dunkel – tenor saxophone
Antti Lötjönen – bass
Jaska Lukkarinen – drums

Manuel Dunkel Standards Trio punctuates to the core of jazz classics with a slightly different route than usually, focusing on rarely used jazz standards and elements. Timeless classics and their melodies might provide footsteps, but in this case, players are allowed to stray away from the path, conveying their experimental and unique expressions how they see fit. Included in the set are challenging takes on original songs by John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. Listeners are in for a treat with the Trio’s swinging, virtuoso-filled soulful touch!

”On foot I had to walk through the solar systems, before I found the first thread of my red dress” writes the Finnish-Swedish poet Edith Södergran in her collection of poems, The Rose Altar from  1919.

The vocalist, improviser and composer Anni Elif Egecioglu have gone through many musical solar  systems with her unique voice. With her remarkably versatile musicianship she has influenced the  art scene of jazz and popular music as well as the classical field both in Finland and abroad. She  born in Gothenburg with roots from Sweden and Turkey and has since many years settled down in  Helsinki. Her debut solo album “Anni Elif – Edith” is based on Edith Södergran’s texts and was  nominated for Best Finnish Jazz Album at the Finnish Emma Awards 2018.

The music invites the listener on a intimate journey where the fine tuned compositions meet an  organic and futuristic soundscape filled with improvisation. The repertoire is mainly based on  poems by Finland’s most internationally well-known poet and also the most important  representative of Finnish-Swedish modernism of all time. Södergran’s pioneering texts are  characterized by vision and the futuristic and symbolic currents of their era, which over a century  later now resonates naturally through Anni Elif’s musical language.

Anni Elif evokes at the same time the sounds and subtleties of Joni Mitchell as well as the passion  and intensity of Janis Joplin. The experience is almost gestalt in its extremes of both power and  delicacy, something of an aural hallucination.”  – Anthony Shaw, All About Jazz

OYJO 18:00

OYJO a.k.a Oulu Youth Jazz Orchestra is the joint big band of Madetoja music high school and Oulu Conservatory. The orchestra includes roughly 20 musicians aged 13 to 19. OYJO compiles a new concert programme every semester, which is presented in concerts in co-operation for example with local festivals. The programme presented in Elojazz has been practiced in the midst of the pandemic. The concert will feature compositions by Finnish jazz legends: Eero Koivistoinen, Olli Ahvenlahti and Jukka Linkola. Many young people who have played at OYJO have carried on to lead professional careers in music afterwards. OYJO has operated in its current form under the leadership of Jaakko Jauhiainen since 2010.

ALEXI TUOMARILA QUARTET FEAT. MATHIAS EICK 18:45 Alexi Tuomarila, who won the Emma Award in 2020, will bring his new Nordic quartet to Elojazz on Friday, August 6th, 2021. Mathias Eick, who has been the band's soloist, has long been one of Norway's absolute top trumpet players. The quartet's drummer is Markku Ounaskari and the bassist is Eero Tikkanen.

PEELA 20:15 The six-member Peela ensemble, made up of a younger generation of jazz artists, performs compositions by guitarist-composer Johannes Granroth. The band's personal and supple groove draws on jazz, funk rock and neo-soul, giving musicians space to play and improvise. The immersive rhythmic mood ends up in Peela's instrumental songs, but Maja Mannila also decorates it with her lyrics.

OASBB x Kasmir 21:45 At Friday's concert, the Oulu All Star Big Band will host one of Finland's brightest stars, R&B-influenced Kasmir. In the concert of the Hupisaari Theater, Kasmir's production will be heard as big band arrangements dressed in soul tunes. The concert will be conducted by Jukka Eskola, the artistic director of the Oulu All Star Big Band and Elojazz.

Tickets: 50 € + Ticketmaster processing fee

In 2021, Elojazz will be held from 5 to 7 August. Trumpeter Jukka Eskola is the artistic director of Elojazz and the festival is produced by Jazz-20 ry. The Elojazz Festival, which is being held for the 32nd time this year, is part of the Oulu August Festival.
