Jazz Finland Live

Street Level, by Jukka Gustavson (vocals and keys), Jan-Olof Strandberg (bass) and Tuomas Törnroos (drums), explores the ground of progressive rock, jazz, blues and funk. Trio performs their own compositions and re-arranged songs by Joe Zawinul, Beatles and Ray Charles with plenty of space for creative improvisation.

Gustavson/Strandberg/Törnroos Street Level was founded in 2017 to perform a few gigs. Since the common groove between the three musicians was easily found, the trio decided to continue the project. The name, Street Level, was inspired by their first gig, which was played at the street level of Cafe Rongo in Porvoo.

Pianist Riitta Paakki’s most recent quartet brings together various styles and distictive sounds of four Finnish top musicians. Manuel Dunkel’s tenor sax compliments Paakki’s playing in the most sensitive way, and the heavy-hitting rhythm section of Kaisa Mäensivu’s bass and Joonas Riippa’s drums gives a solid cornerstone to Paakki’s hard-bop-influenced compositions. The quartet recorded its first album Live at Koko Jazz Club in January 2018, and it was released by Koko Records in August 2018.

The written music gives plenty of room for interaction between the musicians, and together the band members create an expressive and joyful experience that is best enjoyed live. Occasionally they throw in some rare gems of the 60’s hard-bop era, and play them with some kind of a time-and-space distorting magic. 

The band’s regular bassist and bandleader Riitta Paakki’s long-term collaborate Antti Lötjönen will step this one out to go on paternity leave, but his replacement, New York -based bassist Kaisa Mäensivu does not pale in comparison.

Put together by the drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq inviting Théo Ceccaldi on violin and his brother Valentin on cello, IN LOVE WITH has become one of the most emblematic group of the effervescent young French generation. Following a remarkable Finnish debut at April Jazz 2018, the hypnotic trio starts a Nordic tour on November 1st in Tallinn. The round continues in Finland till November 11th with a last concert in Helsinki. The strong French focus at Tampere Jazz Happening 2019 brings also to the Finnish light spots the acclaimed Hermia-Darrifourcq-Ceccaldi trio and Théo Ceccaldi’s super group Freaks, both on November 2nd. Before this tour the French drummer takes part in Jazz Connective in Helsinki on October 29th in a trio with trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and bassist Eero Tikkanen.

As a truly exhilarating project IN LOVE WITH stretches the concept of jazz over the gender borders. Their new album Coitus Interruptus is Strongly influenced by Faulkner’s and Beckett’s novels, where various timeframes and subjectivities unfold in a disorderly manner, almost in a barely comprehensive language. This music has been composed focusing on a main idea: avoiding the finishing point!

Percussionist, improviser and composer, Sylvain Darrifourcq made his training as a classical percussionist. Beginning with rock, he turns to jazz and improvised music later on, and chooses the drums tardily. Recognized figure of this generation of improvisers curious about borders, he is today a much sought aft ermusician. He collaborated with many French, European and American personalities such Joëlle Léandre, Tony Malaby, Michel Portal, Louis Sclavis, Marc Ducret, Andrea Parkins, Akosh S, Kit Downes… In 2009 he obtained a Victoire du Jazz with Emile Parisien Quartet, of which he was the drummer during more than 10 years.
