UMO goes MOTOWN!

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra will continue its popular series of tribute concerts in collaboration with the Savoy Theatre Helsinki. This time the orchestra will tackle a number of 60s and early 70s classics from the catalogue of the iconic Motown Records. Expect such beloved numbers as What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, I Want You by The Jackson 5, Stop! In the Name of Love by The Supremes and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye, all of which will be heard in rich big band arrangements by conductor Ed Partyka. For this special night UMO Helsinki will be joined by soloists Johanna Försti and the United States -born, Germany-based David B. Whitley who is known especially for his work in musicals.

Put together by the drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq inviting Théo Ceccaldi on violin and his brother Valentin Ceccaldi on cello, IN LOVE WITH has become one of the most emblematic group of the bubbling young French generation. Following a remarkable Finnish debut at April Jazz 2018, the hypnotic trio starts a Nordic tour on November 1st in Tallinn. The round continues in Finland till November 11th with a last concert in Helsinki and a concert at Suistoklubi on November 5th.

As a truly exhilarating project IN LOVE WITH stretches the concept of jazz over the gender borders. Their new album Coitus Interruptus is Strongly influenced by Faulkner’s and Beckett’s novels, where various timeframes and subjectivities unfold in a disorderly manner, almost in a barely comprehensive language. This music has been composed focusing on a main idea: avoiding the finishing point!
