Milo & Moses (www)

The debut album of this young jazz trio and considering their age, the exceptional maturity of the boys, has gathered plenty of laudatory reviews and airplay. Having operated and played gigs regularly for two years, Milo & Moses is a group founded by two junior high school students Milo Mäkelä (electric guitar) and Moses Kuloniemi (drums), both 15 years old today. Double bass is played by 18-year-old Jon Pettersson. One year ago, record company KHY Music Finland picked these young men into their roster and released the combo’s debut LP in September 2016. Being the youngest Finnish Jazz ensemble having ever made a record, stylistically this group represents groove jazz and is going to release their second album at Flow Festival 2017.
Plié, the experimental duo consisting of producer Ville Riippa and drummer Joonas Riippa seems to take both its members into some fascinating territory. Ville Riippa usually works on mainstream music, but here is free to indulge a clear gift for sonic free association. Joonas Riippa is a sharp powerhouse drummer, whose edges seem to blur and touch take on new levels of featheryness. We have no idea what will happen at this show. This state is one we share with Plié. Every human reaction opens up a new chain of potential factors and opportunities – millions of them.

Flow Festival: Joshua Redman - Still DreamingSuvilahti, helsinki11.8. At 18:45
Joshua Redman - Still Dreaming (www)

Joshua Redman – one of the best known saxophonists in the world – embarks on his latest musical project with the “Still Dreaming” quartet. This new group features Ron Miles, Scott Colley and Brian Blade, three of the most imaginative voices in contemporary jazz, who will also join Redman on stage at Flow Festival. Together they will interpret the “Old and New Dreams” quartet of the 1970s and ‘80s, a renowned quartet of Ornette Coleman alumni that included Joshua’s father, Dewey Redman. With repertoire consisting of Ornette Coleman compositions and original works, their music was honest, uninhibited and completely engaging in its unpredictable live execution. With Still Dreaming, Joshua Redman fulfills his birthright and explores his heritage by adding a new perspective to this historic material.

Roy Ayers (www)

Roy Ayers has had many musical lives. He started out as a post-bop sideman in the 60s, helped invent jazz-funk in the 70s through his own concrete input and acid jazz in the 90s by way of his towering influence on the progenitors of that scene. His seminal band in the 70s was called Ubiquity and ubiquitous is what he has become: probably the most sampled artist of all time, godfather of neo-soul, still a staple on the soundtrack of any bar where the patrons want to move…. In this new millennium Ayers finally gets to tour a world that has caught up with him.
