Jazz Finland Live

Helsinki’s Savoy Theatre is to play host for an unforgettable jazz evening on 14 September when Jussi Lampela Nonet, led by the eponymous composer, returns to the stage after almost a year-long silence. The acclaimed group will be joined by two first-class younger-generation singers: Maria Ylipää, who, like the nonet, is just re-entering Finnish arenas, and Aili Ikonen who has recently released an acclaimed new album. The theme of the concert is future classics; new songs that have been arranged in the spirit of jazz standards. The lyrics are by Heimo Hatakka, who has previously penned lines for such Finnish artists as Anna Puu, vocal group Viisi and Jonna Järnefelt.

The travelling club series Tuokio sees a special, one-off outfit Liikemiehet give six concerts around Finland. Tuokio is a concept that combines elements of concert tour and public discussion and is produced by the Sivis Study Centre.

Liikemiehet (The Businessmen in English) are a brand new group that dresses impeccably and conveys a general feeling of up-tightness. In addition to playing musical instruments, this concert concept will also take them out of their comfort zone, to the realm of dance, however. How will they pull off playing music and Hanna Brotherus’s choreography – will this bunch of professional musicians turn out to be pro at dancing, too?

The show came into being when cultural designer Oskari Mänttäri of Adult Learning Centre Sivis tackled the concept of play and playing and how it could be adapted to adult life. To play is to approach everyday phenomena creatively and to throw oneself into something new without the fear of failure or embarrassment.

The concert is suitable for all ages, but the target group is especially those adults who have been estranged from the world of play. The aim is to encourage everyone to incorporate play into both working life and leisure time.

The one and unique quartet Ajaton create four-dimensional music that frustrates all unnecessary definitions. Bringing together musicians who represent a host of musical styles and periods, Ajaton, ‘timeless’ in English, are true to their name. This quartet, like its instrumentation and repertory, is a sum of intriguing, seemingly incompatible parts: improvised landscapes, reminiscences of folk music, hints to medieval lute ditties and original compositions intertwine seamlessly in their hands.  

Founded in 2013, the outfit is formed by four original, acclaimed artists working in the fields of folk music, jazz and classical. Led by vocalist Mia Simanainen, Ajaton featuresHenrik Sandås on the bandoneon, Mikko Perkola on the viol and Kari Ikonen on the moog. Rather than defining themselves through formal or stylistic attributes, Ajaton is more interested in giving free rein to each member’s creative whims.

Ruokangas Hako-Rita is a jazz guitar duo from Finland. They have performed at various festival, clubs and private occasions since 2012 with sets consisting of their own compositions and jazz standards. Improvisation, melody and interaction that in the centre of their music and building blocks for new musical narratives. Both members are graduates of Oulu Conservatory and have studied the jazz guitar under the tutelage of leading authorities of Finnish jazz, including Niklas Winter, Raoul Björkenheim and Peter Lerche. In 2015 Heikki Ruokangas released his debut jazz album on London based F-IRE Records.
