keikka

In his artistic doctoral project pianist Jussi Fredriksson explores various jazz piano textures by applying jazz techniques over instrument boundaries.

The stylistic foundation of the pianist’s second diploma concert lies in bebop and its tradition of two-tone accompaniment with the left hand. For instance, the two-tone voicing used by pianists Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, Red Garland and Wynton Kelly has been the inspiration of the concert’s pianistic concept. Pianist Herbie Hancock also used two-tone cluster-like accompaniments in his left hand harmonies, and sometimes only one tone to create rhythmic tension. In this concert Fredriksson is looking for fresh musical shades by applying texturally thin voicing as well as aspects of jazz rhythms and melodies from various instruments. Within the theme of the concert, Jussi Fredriksson Trio will create interpretations of Fredriksson’s compositions and carefully selected works by other musicians.
