Jazz Finland Live

In this lunchtime concert ending the spring season of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, enjoy a vibrant jazz program led by two bright stars of the younger Finnish jazz generation. UMO's trombonist Kasperi Sarikoskiand saxophonist Max Zenger have selected their own compositions for the concert program.

Sarikoski has been playing in UMO since 2019 and Zenger since 2023. They are both distinguished musicians also active outside of UMO.

Kasperi Sarikoski (b. 1988) has performed with numerous Finnish jazz artists and, among others, including bands led by Jukka Linkola, Jukka Perko and Teppo Mäkynen. Of international orchestras, he has performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Stockholm Jazz Orchestra and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis. Sarikoski has released two albums of his own music, Essence and 3 + 1. This lunchtime concert features music from the latter, which he composed and recorded while studying at the Juilliard School in New York.

Max Zenger (b. 1988) leads his own bands, such as Maxxxtet and Globus, with which he won the first place in the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) jazz ensemble competition in 2018. In 2017, Zenger was named the Talent of the Year of the Pori Jazz Festival and in 2018 he was chosen as Artist of the Year for Turku Jazz Festival. He is a founding member of the record label Flame Jazz Records and artistic director of the Porvoo Jazz Festival. Zenger has released ten albums with his own compositions and played on dozens of other records. For this concert, Zenger has handpicked music from his Globus band’s album Flores – on which also Kasperi Sarikoski plays.

The UMO Helsinki Ensemble is a smaller group assembled from members of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, many of whom – in addition to having a long career in UMO – are involved in numerous individual projects.

Flamenco guitar virtuoso Joonas Widenius takes the listener on a diverse musical journey, from the Arctic North to the warmth of Andalusia!

Joonas Widenius is a Finnish top-tier flamenco guitarist. His music is rooted in the sounds of the flamenco guitar, but his distinctive musical language constantly draws influences from elsewhere. In his concerts, the guitarist performs traditional Spanish flamenco melodies along with his own compositions. Widenius has performed extensively across Europe at various festivals, clubs, and concert halls. He has collaborated with artists such as UMO, Perico Sambeat, Iiro Rantala, and Teemu Viinikainen.

The guitarist's skill even astonished the tour manager of flamenco legend Paco de Lucía, who was inspired to write about him:

"I am very surprised to hear such an authentic Flamenco feeling from the north of Europe. Joonas Widenius really has a Spanish heart!"
