Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet play the Helsinki-born trumpeter Vesala's compositions. The frontman's style is modern, groovy jazz with catchy tunes. The quintet was founded in 2011, and now, five years later, all the members have emerged big time in the Finnish jazz scene. The group draws, among others, from Miles Davis's 60s groove and Wayne Shorter's elegant melodic language. The debut Helsinki Soundpost was released on German Ozella Music in September. Koli Jazz, set in the stunning milieu of Koli in eastern Finland, opens the year 2017 in Finnish jazz festivals. Once again, we will be in for high-quality music from some of the most notable Finnish jazzers.

The Friday night will be kicked off by William Suvanne Quartet, led by the eponymous saxophonist. Playing mainly music from their third album, The Tenor, this group takes us on a swinging journey influenced by the sound of New Orleans and the late great Micheal Brecker.

The second act of the evening will be Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet, stopping at Koli on their extensive Finnish Jazz Federation-produced tour. Founded in 2011, this stellar quintet performs the music written by their leader, Helsinki-based trumpeter Martti Vesala. Their sound nods to the rich heritage of 1960s jazz, especially the experimental sound of the era, Miles Davis's famous quintet and Wayne Shorter's musical language.
