Jazz Finland Live

The traditional lunch concert presented by UMO, Savoy Theater and Presto digs into classics of big band jazz. The programme includes intense swinging numbers from the legendary Count Basie Orchestra and the Jones-Lewis Orchestra founded by Thad Jones.

William ‘Count’ Basie (1904–1984) and Thaddeus ‘Thad’ Joseph Jones (1923–1986) were among the most distinguished band leaders in jazz history along with Duke Ellington. Jones was a member of Basie’s orchestra from 1954 to 1963, playing solo trumpet in well-known Basie performances of April in Paris, Shiny Stockings and Corner Pocket, and he also wrote and arranged several numbers that have stood the test of time. Thad Jones brought his art to a peak in his own big band, which he founded together with drummer Mel Lewis in the late 1960s. From the repertoire of this orchestra, UMO will be featuring The Groove Merchant – a truly groovy masterpiece.
